Rust Communications
“Our distributor had product available as needed--no waiting for special deliveries. Cost is competitive with traditional spiral and custom manufactured ducts making them cost effective"

Cape Girardeau, MO is a small town about 115 miles southeast of St. Louis and 175 miles north of Memphis with a population of about 38,000 residents. Amongst its other notable accomplishments, Cape Girardeau is also home for Rush Limbaugh conservative radio talk show host and political commentator who spent his earlier career in the town.

Cape Girardeau is a growing community with a robust economy. One such business is Rust Communications, a privately owned media company based in the city. The family-owned company has full or part ownership of 18 major daily papers. Additionally, they own and operate at least 30 weekly papers and 17 radio stations in eight states.

Rust Communications needed to expand its office space and choose to do so by leasing an older bank building rather than incurring the higher cost of constructing a new building. To repurpose the space, the bank facility went through extensive modifications to meet their requirements including the addition of a new HVAC system. The new system required a separate ducting line to be install for a dedicated outside air unit along with ducting for ventilation air. Historically spiral or standard ducting would be used but the mechanical contractor was also considering other options.

GreenSeam Industries (GSI) is a DMI company and a manufacture of factory sealed performance products, and is a leading source for factory sealed pipe and fittings in North America. Aaron Srsen, a rep at American Metals and distributor for GSI snap lock pipe and fittings, is always looking for new and innovative products to offer his mechanical contractor clients. When he became aware of GreenSeam Plus snap lock pipe from GSI, he immediately realized the product’s potential to increase the efficiency of field installers, by reducing installation time and improving quality. GreenSeam Plus snap-lock pipe and fittings are available in a variety of diameters, lengths and alloys. The GreenSeam Plus line of pipe and fittings also ships with factory applied gaskets that eliminate post assembly manual sealing.

Mike Lax of GSI visited American Metals to make a call on Sheet Metal Contractors Inc. (SMCI) in the autumn of 2015 with the goal of introducing them to the GreenSeam Plus system. SMCI, the sheet metal contractor for the Rust Communication project, provides heating and cooling services in and around the St. Louis, Missouri market. They maintain an 80,000 square foot office and plant in the region. Neal Krodinger is Executive Vice President & Chief Operations Officer for the company.

Lax was quick to point out the attributes of GreenSeam Plus. “We have designed and engineered a completely factory sealed pipe and fittings duct system for the low pressure side of HVAC systems.  Our HETOs, Conicals, Collars, and Pipe will provide sheet metal contractors with a SMACNA Class 3 seal without needing to use additional sealants or tapes on the jobsite.

The product has a gasket in the longitudinal and transverse joints to prevent air leakage. This gives the contractor an air-tight system that doesn't need duct sealant to be applied.  SMCI liked the fact that the GreenSeam Plus product provided significant material and labor savings. American Metals Supply is a distributor of HVAC products and is headquartered in St. Louis, MO. They have seven locations throughout the Midwest and employ 88 people.

Overall the installation required 900 linear feet of new ducting. Sizes varied in diameter, but were readily available through the distributor. Neal Krodinger was not disappointed! “Our distributor had product available as needed--no waiting for special deliveries. Cost is competitive with traditional spiral and custom manufactured ducts making them cost effective,” said Krodinger.

Other benefits include reduced shipping cost since it is delivered bundled, easy assembly and installation and an atheistically appeal product since there is no external sealant required. The project foreman liked the performance and the customers appreciate the savings!

GreenSeam+Nolensville High School“Before we committed to the product we had representatives from GreenSeam Industries demonstrate that the pipe would perform as promised,” said Meacham. “After the testing we were convinced this product was for us."
GreenSeam+St. Elizabeth's Hospital“This project was the first where we used the GreenSeam Plus system,” said Lackey. “The installers really like the product because it’s fast to install and works so well. As a result, it’s the only product we use on all low-pressure pipe systems.”
